2027 Showdown: Opposition blames Ruto for State violence, ethnic bias

Fred Matiang’i, who served as Interior Cabinet Secretary in the previous administration, dismissed accusations that the opposition is sponsoring recent anti-government protests.
The United Opposition coalition has declared its intent to take legal action against President William Ruto over alleged extrajudicial killings, corruption, and ethnic bias if it wins the 2027 General Election.
During a major rally held in Bungoma town as part of their second tour of Western Kenya, key leaders in the alliance accused the president of presiding over a regime marred by injustice and impunity.
The group includes former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, former Cabinet Secretaries Justin Muturi and Fred Matiang’i, ex-UNCTAD boss Mukhisa Kituyi, UDA Secretary General Cleophas Malalah, Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka, and several current and former Members of Parliament.
“Ruto is the most corrupt president in the world and should face judges when we take over,” said Justin Muturi, a former Attorney General and Cabinet Secretary under Ruto’s government.
Muturi claimed that under Ruto’s watch, cases of abductions and killings of innocent young people had increased, calling them part of a disturbing pattern of state brutality that must be investigated and punished.
Other leaders in the alliance also accused the president of favouring individuals from one ethnic group in state appointments, saying it undermines national unity and violates the values of fairness laid out in the Constitution.
DAP-K leader Eugene Wamalwa described their political push as a fight for freedom from poor leadership and state oppression. “Our main goal is to free the country from these barbaric acts. Let us unite and send Ruto home,” said Wamalwa.
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua said the alliance is holding rallies across the country to engage citizens and build a united front. He confirmed that the team would eventually settle on a single presidential candidate.
“We are currently engaging with Kenyans across the country. At the right time, we will agree on one flag bearer,” Gachagua told the crowd.
Gachagua also took a moment to apologise to residents of Bungoma and the Mt. Kenya region for backing Ruto in the last election.
Fred Matiang’i, who served as Interior Cabinet Secretary in the previous administration, dismissed accusations that the opposition is sponsoring recent anti-government protests.
“If they truly believe that one of us is funding the protests, then let them arrest that person instead of whining at rallies,” Matiang’i said.
